How to Work From Home Doing Medical Billing and Coding!

If you’re thinking about doing medical billing and coding and working from home there are a few things you want to know. First of all do you have the ability or skills or training in order to be able to process claims for doctors, dentists or large clinics.

To process claims at home you’ll either have to be in business for yourself or make some arrangement with your employers to work at home. The employer in this case would be the doctor, dentist or other health professional or clinic that needs medical billing service. This may be difficult to do if you haven’t had the proper training and don’t have the right medical billing software.

Many people who do work from home doing medical billing and/or coding generally have their own business. They have started home businesses after getting the right training. (Coding requires separate training and certification may be required by some employers.)

It would probably be difficult to get on-the-job training and more than likely you’ll have to get training through online courses, programs or schools or on campus locally where you live. There is a national exam for certification as a Medical Billing Specialist that would probably be required by most companies seeking your service. Plus after you get some training you’ll want on-the-job experience so you can learn the ropes. You want to know what you’re doing before you work alone at home.

So one of the things you can do is call some of the clinics in your area and find out whether they do their medical billing and coding in-house or whether they send it out to a billing service. If they do it in-house, ask if they hire people to do additional billing for them at home either by contracting out to you or hiring you to work at home and they would act as employer. There may be a lot of variation in practices in different geographical areas. So best to call and see what you can find out.

So now you may know a little bit more about whether you want to work from home doing medical billing and coding. When you do decide that you do need some training, there is federal government money available for online courses as well as on-campus. So you want to check out medical billing training online and local colleges. Be careful of any scams that may be operating. Read the fine print and don’t sign up for any courses you don’t need.

Home Health Care: Proper Certification Required

Originally Published on CMS.gov

The Affordable Care Act requires a physician or a non-physician practitioner to have a face-to-face encounter with the beneficiary before a physician certifies the beneficiary’s eligibility for the home health benefit. One aspect of the certification is for the certifying physician to certify (attest) that the face-to-face encounter occurred and document the date of the encounter. For medical review purposes, Medicare requires documentation in the certifying physician’s medical records and/or the acute/post-acute care facility’s medical records to be used as the basis for certification of patient eligibility. This documentation must include the clinical note or discharge summary for the face-to-face encounter. Avoid home health claims payment denials or improper payment recoveries by understanding Medicare’s requirements.

Medical Coding at Home

I have worked as a medical biller and coder for 3 years. Now after having my first child I would like to find a job medical coding at Home. Because I have completed the program as a medical biller I feel very qualified to work from home but I am slowly figuring out if this is really an option for me.

So far I have learned that I can get a job for an agency and there is software that I can purchase for my computer. Other then that I am a bit stumped. There are also online courses that teach medical coding that also mention something about software.

Because of my experience I do not want to buy into a scam of buying software that will not do me any good. If I cannot find work then no amount of software is going to help me.

I have also read that depending on the size of the medical practice or hospital, for example, I could get a medical coding at home job where the facility could log me into their system and I could wok from home over my internet connection on my home computer. With an IT specialist on the staff these larger facilities can have additional firewall protection added to my computer because I will be looking at patient information that needs to be protected.

Doing medical coding from home is beneficial for not just me but also my potential employer as well. There is less calling in sick, insurance, space issues, things like that. working from home generally makes for a happy employee. There are very few legitimate work from home jobs and for medical coding there are scams out there as well.

However, that is not to say that they are all scams. There are legitimate medical transcription at home jobs out there for people who have completed the courses and completed the program. This is not a quick certificate for anyone. when I became a medical biller and coder it took me one full year of course work full time.

I just need to learn where the opportunities are for legitimate medical coding at Home jobs are. From there I am hoping that my experience and willingness to learn a new way of doing my job will help me to get a great at home position.

The Reality of Coding from Home with Children

These days I have more going on than audits, updates, and continuing education for CPT and ICD-10 as I eagerly await the arrival of my first child.  The beauty of the internet means I can order all kinds of things for my pregnancy and the baby from the comfort of my recliner and have them delivered directly to my doorstep.  One recent package included a packet of “stuff”  – everything from a baby bottle, to gift cards for obscure things I’m pretty sure I’ll never order, to coupons, to a flyer telling me I can work from home as a medical coder while I take care of my baby.

It was the last item that really jumped out at me and gave me pause.  I wasn’t really surprised by the claims about making lots of money while working from home.  It wasn’t the statement about the “prestige” of working for physicians.  What caught my eye were the pictures on the flyer of women sitting in front of computers with infants on their laps.  Because while I don’t know what it’s like to be in charge of a baby all day (yet), I do know what it’s like to be a coder working from home and the job doesn’t lend itself to simultaneous babysitting.
Most days I love working from home.  It’s awesome on those days when you know you have to get work done but you don’t really feel like taking a shower or being in public first thing in the morning. So yeah, it’s great if you are not a morning person! On those days, there’s nothing better than shuffling down to my office, coffee cup in hand (okay, so it’s half-decaf these days), flipping the switch on my computer, and easing into my day.  Some days I am joined by my eternal lap cat, who could sit on my lap all day if I were a statue.  On some days she wants to sit on my lap while I work, which is generally only okay if I am on a conference call where I don’t need to take notes.  Which is pretty much never.
Here’s the big secret the flyer doesn’t advertise: coding requires an immense amount of concentration and some days I can concentrate pretty well and block out the world.  Other days, I have to shut off all email, the ringer on my phone, and the radio just so I can focus on work.  On those days, I shoo the cat off my desk/lap and try to direct her to her bed in the corner.  If necessary, I can put her in the hallway and close the door.  You can’t really shove your kid aside when you need to concentrate.  And you can’t code effectively and efficiently with a kid on your lap.  And if you can, then your child isn’t getting the attention he/she needs.
The point: coding from home is a nice perk, but it is not a substitute for child care.  Like most other new parents, I’m discovering the joys of budgeting for child care after maternity leave.  And I get it – it’s expensive.
Just in case this post hasn’t quite convinced you, maybe this will.  Many remote coding contracts include a clause on child care.  You may be required to promise in writing that you will not engage in child care when you are on the clock.  So if your reason for wanting to code from home is so you can save on child care, coding isn’t the job for you.
