Creating a LinkedIn Account to Find a Coding Job

Finding a job used to mean you would fill out an application and hope they would give you a call. Now one of the best ways to get your name out there is to create a great, professional LinkedIn profile.

The first thing you should do, if you have yet to already, is to create the perfect LinkedIn profile to represent you professionally! Some things your profile should include: a professional picture of you, headline that lists your current position, summary of your experience and skills, any sort of media you may have such as videos or images in a professional setting, experience that should be listed as a chronological resume, any work examples you have available, education, and certifications.

Your next step is create your custom URL for your LinkedIn profile. Instead of having a random assortment of letters and numbers as your URL, change it to your name to show: linkedin.com/yournamehere. This way it is easy for you to remember and share your direct link with others, as well as makes it easier for recruiters to refer back to your profile.

Next is to be sure your account settings are how you want them and what you’d like to be notified for. You want to be sure you are receiving emails for specific things you are looking for like jobs, connections, etc. and your email is not being bombarded with things you may not care about.

You’ll want to then start making connections on LinkedIn. This can include coworkers, people you have met in passing, friends, etc. Just be sure to include a note with your invite request to be professional and re-introduce yourself if necessary.

To expand your network, you should join groups to network with like-minded individuals. There are many job groups that post any open opportunities, as well as networking groups like our MMI Member Only Group and other alumni groups. Being involved in these groups can grow your network and help you establish new professional relationships.

To stay in the know, you will also want to follow companies and thought leaders in the field to know what is being discussed. This can majorly assist you with interviews as well as day-to-day conversations with colleagues.

Best of luck to you in your job search!
