Are You Missing Prolonged Services Reimbursement?

The CPT book contains untold thousands of codes, so many that it would be nearly impossible for anybody to learn and understand them all. This means that there are several codes that can result in additional reimbursement when used properly, but many practices do not know how to use them properly or even that they exist. One such code set is that for prolonged services, or services that go beyond the time frame already established in the description of certain evaluation and management (E/M) codes. When used correctly, these codes can result in a higher rate of reimbursement for many common services, meaning that they are an invaluable addition to any practice’s coding arsenal.

Better still, these prolonged services can apply to a wide variety of situations, including those where the provider performs additional services without seeing the patient at all. Such is the case for an extended review of the patient’s records after he or she has already gone home. While many people might think of this as just another part of the job, it can actually qualify for certain prolonged codes and win a practice additional payment.

While choosing to code for prolonged services may seem like a no-brainer, you want to make sure that you’re using them correctly. Appending an inappropriate code can trigger a denial and cost your practice time and money as you prepare an appeal, so it is critical that you use these codes right the first time around. Thankfully, MMI has developed its very own prolonged services training webinar designed to teach the specifics of this CPT section. The August 21st presentation will be led by Rhonda Granja, RMC, CPC, CMA, CMC, CMOM, a seasoned veteran of MMI who knows all the ins and outs of these codes.
